Labor/Delivery

Curated by Sarah Grass

July 7 -July 8, 2023

Opening reception Friday, July 7, 6-9pm

Bob’s Gallery and The Pack Art School are pleased to present Labor \ Delivery, a group exhibition of the nine participants in The Artist Rebirth Cycle, a nine-month intensive course designed to birth and rebirth artistic self identity.

What does it mean to be reborn in 2023? Does it mean freezing time in order to meet the demands of late-stage capitalism? Or freezing eggs to fulfill dreams of love and family in this context? Is it reimagining a childhood fit to your true nature? Teenage years free to love whomever you love? Maybe it’s understanding complex identity in a globalized society—or negotiating narratives from various governments inconsistent with the self. Could it also be that the reborn self is split into parts, each examining the other with its own foreign policy? Do these parts have wild edges in flux like multiple readings of the same ancient epic? Are we reborn in a fabled garden at the sacrifice of a mother, inching closer— or hotter—to a point of no return? At this precipice of rebirth, do we make amends or stop giving a fuck? Perhaps a rebirth is always a little bit of both.

The artists of Labor \ Delivery spent the past nine months gestating new modes of thinking, visualizing, and birthing new bodies of work. The results, now on view, present a cross-section of collective rebirth in 2023. The labor is live, still in process, and like the artists, actively questioning what the future will hold.
