Eating Itself

Bob’s Gallery is pleased to announce Kate Alboreo’s first solo show with the gallery, Eating Itself. Sourcing from organic forms found in her own life, art history, popular culture, and botanical imagery, Alboreo creates vivid abstractions that crowd and push forward attempting to break out of the page. Impossible landscapes populated by androgynous wrestlers, weeds, and snakes shift between anatomical articulation and non-representational gesture. 

The exhibition’s title, Eating Itself, refers to the ouroboros who continually cannibalizes itself, constantly being reborn. Reworking landscape watercolors that she started in Florida in 2016, Alboreo inundated these old works with knowledge and life experiences from the past six years. Drawn from life in two seperate locations, geo-political baggage is floating just beneath the watery surface.

Alboreo works by spilling thin, translucent layers of paint allowing for opportunities to evolve beyond her control. Through her process and careful composition, Alboreo overlaps the bulging wrestler with the botanical flower. The wet, marshy, overgrown trees of the Florida everglades melt into the resilient plants of the city that break through bricks in order to adapt to their circumstances. 

Kate Alboreo  (b. 1987, Akron, Ohio) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Alboreo graduated with a BFA from the University of Akron in 2010 and earned an MFA from the University of South Florida in 2017. Alboreo completed artist residencies at Benaco Arte, Italy in 2017, Trestle Art Space, NY in 2018, and was a member of the Brooklyn artist collective Wayfarers, NY in 2019 - 2020. Alboreo has presented exhibitions with Paradice Palase in Brookly, NY, with Rhizome Gallery in D.C., Art Lab Tokyo in Tokyo, QUAID, and the Contemporary Art Museum, both in Tampa, FL.
